what is a subplot

What is a plot point?.What is Subplot
Plot points are events in your story that moves the story into the next plot point arc. These plot points hold the story together.  The four most important plot points are the ones that move the story from act 1 to act 2 from act 2 to act 3 the beginning and ending points. The other important plot point is the middle of the story. Plot Points are just one step in creating a movie script.  If you would like to learn about the other steps check out the movie script guide.
Most screen writing classes seem to ignore this important element of a movie script.  A lot of times it is referred to as subtext.   Something that lies beneath the surface that is implied that is done discretely. You don't hit the audience over the head with the subplot.  Subplot is used to tell the theme of the story and movie the plot forward. In the movie Inception the subplot is the more interesting element the love story and the pain that our character feels for losing his love.  The overall theme of the story is corporate espionage.  But the events unfold as the subplot progresses and is interwoven into the story. The subplot is what makes your character interesting.
B Story How many subplots?
Typically your B story starts on about page 30.  It tends to be the start of the journey and the thrust of act 2.  Most of the time is is a love story. More generally it tends to be an element about your main character.  In signs the B story is a preacher losing his faith.  The movie ends the aliens leaving but with him finding his faith once again becoming whole. The B story needs to reveal something interesting about your antagonist. It is a took for your audience to understand and empathize with your lead. This is what makes an character interesting. There is no limit to the number of subplots in the story.  Your subplot can be the relationship between your star and costar. It can be not only the love interest but the reason why they love each other.  The idea is to build scenes that are layered and rich in texture.  They make your story interesting Building a few subplots into your story is a great tool to move your story forward but also create interesting characters and an interesting story.  Rather than just boy meets girl, girl falls in love with boy.  Girl realizes the boy isn't what she thought.  Then ultimately she realizes that she was actually in love and they live happy ever after.  That's a great plot but use subplot to make this story interesting.
